September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day and today Canadians are honouring and remembering the children who were sent to residential schools (as well as their families and communities) during a long, dark period of our history.
Although my ancestry is Ukrainian, I still feel a friendly connection with people from our First Nations and when I was working on my TV series, Saanich: Emerging Land; Emerging People, I was inspired by the values, traditions, and philosophies of our First Nations neighbours.
The word, “Saanich” comes from the W̱SÁNEĆ First Nation, and means “emerging land” or “emerging people.”
And on that note, I have an announcement that ties in with this day – my little contribution to conversation about how we can move forward from here.
My TV series, Saanich: Emerging Land; Emerging People is now live on TELUS Optik TV (though it won’t be official until November 15, 2022).
So, if you’re looking for something new to watch this weekend and if you’re a TELUS subscriber, grab your remote and hit the “on demand” button. From there, type in “SAANICH” on the search bar and you’ll see my photos. Find episode 1 and watch in order from there.
And if you don’t have access to TELUS Optik TV, I’m uploading my videos to my YouTube channel so that everyone can see them, if they’re interested. I might turn my videos into a watch party as well. I’ll keep you posted.

As I enter this new chapter in my life of being a published author and TV host, I feel different, but in a good way. I had no idea I had been carrying this energy of my stories with me for so long but now that I’ve released them and my stories are live and out there, I feel free!
